Sugar-Free Apple-Raisin Sauce Plus Low-Sugar Cranberry Apple

Homemade Sugar-Free Apple-Raisin Sauce is naturally sweetened by the fruit itself, a little cinnamon, and apple cider.  Feel free to add a bit of honey or real maple syrup after it's cooked.  

I've also included a Low-Sugar Cranberry Apple Sauce variation. 

Homemade, Sugar-Free Apple-Raisin Sauce is the perfect way to enjoy the fruit of the season ~ warmed with cinnamon and any other optional spices.  Serve with yogurt, cottage cheese, or bake into Healthy French Toast Casserole in lieu of plain raisins.   Or have on the side with roasted chicken, or baked fish or any other  Meat & Fruit Centered Meals.

As a side note, we consider judicial use of honey and tree saps to be providing many minerals and health benefits, including manganese found in maple syrup.

Homemade Sugar-Free Apple-Raisin Sauce Recipe

Fall is a great time to take your children or loved one to an apple orchard to pick your own apples, then come home and make homemade applesauce!


  • 6 apples, peeled and chopped (Honeycrisp, gala, Jonathans, or your fave)
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup apple cider, or water
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1+ tsp. cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg, ground clove or cardamom ~ optional (I usually just use cinnamon)
  • 1-2 Tbsp. dried cranberries, optional ~ adds a slight tartness (or use lemon)
  • Squeeze of lemon juice, optional ~ brightens the flavor

Place ingredients in the pot, and let simmer on medium-low until apples are soft.  Sweeten with a tiny bit of honey or real maple syrup if desired.

Leave as is, or mash with a potato masher or fork to desired consistency.  Alternatively, process in a food processor or blender.  


Variations for Sugar-Free Apple-Raisin Sauce

  • Spice it up with fresh grated and squeezed ginger
  • Add a pinch of other spices like nutmeg, cardamom or allspice
  • Add a small handful of dried cranberries in addition to the raisins
  • Add cut up dried plums (prunes)


LOW-SUGAR CRANBERRY SAUCE 

Simmer, mostly covered with lid:  1/2 cup apple cider, 1 bag frozen cranberries, 4 peeled and chopped apples, 1 Tbsp. orange marmalade, 1 tsp. cinnamon, pinch of nutmeg.  Once the cranberries pop, and all the fruit has softened, sweeten with 1+ Tbsp. real maple syrup or honey, and optional pinch or two of stevia.  Adjust to taste.  

Process in a food processor, or mash with a potato masher to desired texture and thickness.  

If desiring thicker:  Combine 1 Tbsp. kudzu root or arrowroot starch in a small bowl with 2 Tbsp. cold water, then add to the cranberries.  Simmer a few minutes longer, until thickened.  

Gelatin could also be used, being sure to dissolve in cool water or cider first, then add hot liquid ~ enough to dissolve before adding to cranberries.

This is great slightly tart with meats or yogurt, however, feel free to sweeten it more as desired.  Many people may find my level of sweetness still too tart.  I find it refreshing, and a great complement with a salty savory roast turkey dinner.
